Issue No. 1071 - If a person doubts, about the number of rak‘ats in a recommended prayer, he has the choice to select the lesser option or the higher; except in the case whereby he selects the higher option, the prayer would then be regarded as void; in this case he should select the lesser option. For instance if one doubts whether he has performed one or two rak‘ats, he can choose whichever. However, if he doubts whether he has performed two or three rak‘ats he must choose the first one.

Likewise, if the imam knows how many rak‘ats he has performed, but the ma’mūm doubts, the latter should follow the imam and ignore his doubt.

However, if the time has not passed yet, and he has not performed an act which invalidates the prayer, he should offer the Precautionary prayer and if he has done an act which invalidates the prayer, the obligatory precaution is that he should offer Precautionary prayer and repeat his prayer as well.

Issue No. 1073 - There is no difference between doubts in the acts of obligatory or recommended prayers. For example, if one doubts about sūrah al-fātiḥa or rukū‘, and its time of performance has not passed yet, he should perform it, and if it has, then he should ignore it.

Issue No. 1054 - If a person, who is offering prayer in a sitting or lying position, doubts at the time of reciting sūrah al-fātiḥa or tasbīḥāt arbaʿah, whether or not he has performed sajdah or tashahhud, he should ignore his doubt. However, if the doubt occurs before starting the recitation of sūrah al-fātiḥa or tasbīḥāt arbaʿah, he should perform them.
