The Criterion for The Limit of Tarakhus in Cities

Issue No.1156- When it comes to cities, normal cities should be considered as the criterion. Therefore if a city is situated at a very high or a very low place, it should be treated like normal cities; meaning we should observe the distance it takes in normal cities that he would not hear the adhān or that its residents would not be able to see him.

Doubt about Reaching the Limit of Tarakhus

Issue No.1157- If a person doubts whether or not he has reached the limit of tarakhuṣ, or whether the voice he hears is of adhān or not, he should offer complete prayer. In case, however, he hears the adhān but the words are not clear, he should, as an obligatory precaution, offer both complete as well as qaṣr prayer.

Issue No. 1158Reaching the Limit of Tarakhus

Hearing the Azan and Seeing the City Must Be Done in Normal Way

Issue No.1158- If a person reaches a place where the adhān of the city, which is usually pronounced from an elevated place, cannot be heard, he should shorten his prayer, although he may hear an adhān broadcast from a strong loud speaker. If a person’s eyes or ears are stronger or weaker than the usual ones, they are not the criteria; rather the criteria are normal eyes or ears.

A Place Which Has Been Adopted As One’s Residence

Issue No.1161- When a person adopts a place as his residence in a way that he is no longer considered as a traveller there irrespective of whether he has the intention of living there permanently or temporarily (for example, he intends to stay there for two years or more uninterruptedly), this place is considered to be his hometown. This rule also applies to government employees and office workers who may serve every two years at a place. They should treat that place as their hometown.

Cancelling the Intention of Staying for Ten Days

Issue No. 1171- If a traveller at first decides to stay at a place for ten days but later becomes doubtful or completely abandons this idea and it is, before offering one prayer consisting of four rak‘ats, he should shorten the prayer. However, if this occurs after one has already offered a four rak‘at prayer, he should offer complete prayer so long as he is at that place.

Issue No. 1172Having the Intention of Staying for Ten Days

One Who Intends Staying Ten Days and Fasts But Gives up at Afternoon

Issue No. 1172- If a person, who has decided to stay at a place for ten days, engaged in offering a fast and abandons the idea of staying there after midday and has already offered a four rak‘at prayer, his fast, is correct, and he should offer complete prayer so long as he stays there. If he has not offered a four rak‘at prayer, the fast of that day is not valid and he should offer qaṣr prayer.

Deciding in the Middle of the Prayer to Stay There for Ten Days or More

Issue No. 1174- If a traveller starts offering prayer with the intention of offering qaṣr prayer and then decides in the middle of the prayer that he would stay there for ten days or more, he should complete the prayer in four rak‘ats. On the contrary, if he, who has decided to stay at a place for ten days, changes his mind while offering a four rak‘at prayer and has not yet started the third rak‘at, he should complete the prayer with two rak‘ats and shorten his succeeding prayers. But if he has gone into the rukū‘ of the third rak‘at, his prayer is void, and he should shorten his prayer as long as he is there.

Staying Beyond Ten Days

Issue No. 1175- If a traveller who has decided to stay at a place for ten days, stays there for more than ten days, he should offer complete prayer as long as he does not start travelling, and it is not necessary that he makes a new intention for staying for a further ten days.
